Raisin experiment

Today room 4 were scientists and completed a raisin experiment using sparkling water, tap water and raisins. We found out that raisins sunk to the bottom in tap water and only had a little number of bubbles on them. In sparkling water we found out that the raisins danced up, down and around! This was because the carbon dioxide created lots of little bubbles that stuck to each raisin, pushing the raisin up and down. It was a fun filled afternoon with lots of learning and laughter.
Will you try this at home?

Explanation writing

Room 4 working hard at writing explanations about the water cycle! They are all enjoying writing explanations, each day a number of students run into class asking what they are going to be writing about. Keep it up room 4 :)

Sherbet recipe

Classic Sherbet
1 cup icing sugar
2-3 tablespoons Raro (we used orange and tropical)
2-3 teaspoons tartaric acid
2-3 teaspoons citric acid
1 teaspoon basking soda

*the amount of tartaric acid and citric acid used will make it more/less sour and fizzy

Making sherbet

Room 4 made sherbet! As part of our experiment the children had to taste each ingredient seperately which was an interesting and exciting process. We then mixed all ingredients together and made the sherbet! During the experiment the students were being scientists by making predictions and recording their observations.

Creative maths

Today for maths room 4 had a creative task to complete. Because we have been learning all about shapes, lines and angles the children had to create a skate park or theme park using 2D shapes, 3D shapes, right angles, and parrallel lines.

News in Room 4

Lots of students have even bringing in interesting and exciting news items. Today Theo bought in a crystal collection, the children loved looking at all the different types of crystals. And Summer bought in a piece of carved wood that she got as a present when she was 5!

Yeast fun

Today the children completed a yeast in bags science experiment. The students had 4 bags with different ingredients in them, cold water, cold water and sugar, warm water and warm water and sugar and each bag had 1 tablespoon of yeast. It was interesting to predict what would happen and observe what actually happened. The children found that the bag with warm water and sugar made the yeast the most active, and the cold water alone was the least active.
We have left them in the classroom overnight to see if the yeast rises more through the night.

Life education

Life education and Harold are at Awapuni this week. Room 4 are learning all about healthy relationships! The children were very focused and had lots of fun.

Kapa Haka

Congratulations to these students who received certificates in today's assembly. They all really deserved them for being super learner and role models. Ka pai :)

Coke and Mentos experiment

On Wednesday we started off our Kitchen science unit by doing a coke and Mentos experiment. We used coke, diet coke and even water to see the difference in chemical reactions. We learnt that the carbon dioxide in diet coke especially reacts with the surface area of the Mentos lollies, forming lots of little bubbles!

Ball skills

In daily exercise this week we have been doing a lot of activities around ball skills
